12 minutes walking distance from Okunoin, the Holy Spot.
An authentic Japanese house in a quiet neighborhood.
Make the most of your Koyasan experience by staying at Terakoya Zuien.

One of Japan’s prominent holy sites, Koyasan. Terakoya Zuien is an accommodation facility converted from a traditional single-story Japanese house. We have renovated a building, which we previously used as a training center for massage therapy, into a guest house in 2024. This house is an ideal place not only for a family or group trip but also for long stays and, of course, as a training facility.

The term “Terakoya” refers to temple schools or public educational institutions that taught reading and writing to the children of the peasant class and contributed to the high literacy rate during the Edo period in Japan. The term “Zuien” is the monastic name of the president of the foundation. In the name “Terakoya Zuien,” the combination of these two words expresses a wish that people who want to learn in Koyasan will stay in this house.

All the rooms in this house—the living room (11 m²), bedroom No. 1 (11 m²), and bedroom No. 2 (16 m²)—are traditional Japanese rooms with tatami mats. Bedroom No. 1 can accommodate up to 2 people, while Bedroom No. 2 can accommodate up to 3 people. Each room is equipped with storage where guests can store suitcases or backpacks. A set of clean towels and bed linens will be provided for each guest.

The kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, kettle, coffee machine, and basic cooking tools and tableware. In the living room, there is a large low table where guests can enjoy meals or tea together.

The toilet is an INAX shower toilet. The bathroom is equipped with a traditional Japanese stainless-steel bathtub. There is also a washing machine in the laundry space, so guests can maintain hygiene even during a long stay.

From the outside, the building seems like a typical Japanese single-story house. However, the interior is quite spacious and equipped with all the necessary facilities, which will make guests’ stay more comfortable and enjoyable.
